Seoul to give food donations to N. Korea

The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries said on
Wednesday (April 2) that it plans to supply famine-stricken
North Korea with 1.5 billion won ($1.2 million) worth of
dried sea laver.
It said a total of 780,000 sets of the sea plant (one set is
composed of 100 pieces) are to be donated to the North in the
next month to stabilize the price of seaweed in the local
market. It added it consultations were held with the Ministry
of Unification on the provision.

Out 1.77 million sets of dried lavers stockpiled at
warehouses, 780,000 sets will be given to the North and the
rest will go to such local social welfare facilities as
orphanages.

"Some 1.4 billion won is needed to organize for the disposal
of the food," a ministry official said. "To save expenditure
and to prevent a fall in price, we decided to give it to the
North."
